Stem Team East - Wind Tunnel Activity For Schools

Stem Team East ran this activity very successfully at the Engineering Festival at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford on the 18th October 2011.  Over 500 pupils attended the day and had fantastic feedback from both students and teachers with many mentioning the wind tunnel activity.

This activity and event is a window on engineering, by engineers, for the engineers of the future. Hosted in this impressive museum of Engineering, the event was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn through engagement with today’s Scientists, Technologists, Engineers and Mathematicians who are involved currently in modern engineering.

Stem Team East aim to draw a broad cross-section of Engineering companies and Engineering Institutions from across the region to showcase the prowess of Engineering in East Anglia.

The students had to make a model vehicle from the foam, attach it to a chassis in the wind tunnel and work out the drag coefficient for their vehicle.  We had some wonderful shapes - conventional smoothed truck type bodies, arrow shapes and even one which had a strong resemblance to a fish!
